Tips on using essential oils safely
Essential oils have been used safely for a very long time. Here are some important guidelines to follow when using essential oils:
• Keep all essential oils out of the reach of children and pets. Store essential oils in childproof containers when necessary.
• Never apply an essential oil undiluted. Follow the recommendations for proper dilution.
• Do not use essential oils on babies or children, unless you are working with a qualified practitioner.
• Always perform a patch test using 2% diluted essential oil in a carrier oil applied to your inner arm and wait for 24 hours to check for redness, irritation, or any adverse reactions. Do not use if an adverse reaction occurs. Seek medical help if necessary.
• Never use essential oils internally, unless you are working with a qualified practitioner.
• Avoid getting essential oils in your eyes, ears, nose, or mouth, or in contact with other sensitive mucous membranes.
• If you have sensitive skin, cardiovascular or kidney problems, epilepsy, or any other medical conditions, do not use essential oils unless you have been advised by your healthcare practitioner that it is safe.
• If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, seek advice from your healthcare professional before using essential oils.
• If you are taking any medications for any medical problem, do not use essential oils unless you have been advised by your healthcare practitioner that it is safe.
• Do not go into direct sunlight for at least eight hours after applying a product that contains a photosensitizing oil
• If an essential oil gets into your eyes, immediately flush them with cold milk or vegetable oil to dilute the essential oil. Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
• If an undiluted essential oil gets onto your skin, use a cream or vegetable oil to dilute and then wash with soap and water.
• If an essential oil is ingested, notify your Poison Control Center immediately and seek appropriate medical treatment.
